Congressman Krishnamoorthi and CEO Jim Johnson discuss the impacts the Republican budget will have on Franklin Hospital. (Click the image above to watch KFVS coverage of the event.)

On Tuesday, I visited Franklin Hospital in Benton to highlight the devastating impact of the Republican-passed One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which slashes more than $1 trillion in federal health care funding, including over $900 billion from Medicaid. Franklin is one of at least nine hospitals in Illinois now facing immediate risk of closure as a direct result of this law. Joined by hospital CEO Jim Johnson and frontline staff, I saw firsthand what’s at stake. This hospital delivers babies, treats medical emergencies, and serves a Medicaid-dependent rural population with nowhere else to turn. These cuts don’t just threaten the hospital’s budget; they endanger the health and safety of the entire region.
The Republican bill doesn’t just jeopardize rural hospitals. It undermines the entire health care system. It would strip health coverage from millions of Americans and weaken care even for those who remain insured. Families who rely on Medicaid could be kicked off altogether, while those still covered may face longer wait times, fewer providers, and reduced access to critical services. New bureaucratic red tape will force patients to constantly reprove their eligibility just to stay enrolled.
It is not possible to eliminate a fifth of a hospital’s funding, as the Republican budget does, and reasonably expect it to remain open. I’ll keep fighting to reverse these reckless cuts and protect access to health care for every Illinoisan, no matter their ZIP code. You can watch WPSD’s coverage of the event here and KFVS’s coverage here.

Congressman Krishnamoorthi warns Epstein files may serve to distract Americans from the dangers included in President Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act. (Click the image above to watch the full interview.)

This week, I introduced a resolution declaring that Ghislaine Maxwell, Jeffrey Epstein’s longtime associate and co-conspirator in a years-long child sex trafficking operation, must not receive a presidential pardon, commutation, or any other form of clemency. As I said on Morning Joe Wednesday morning, there can be no deal that allows her to walk free.
Maxwell was convicted in 2021, after a fair trial, for grooming and trafficking underage girls for Epstein and other powerful men to abuse. She is currently serving a 20-year sentence. Yet she is now refusing to testify before Congress unless granted immunity, a brazen attempt to leverage her crimes for her own freedom. The notion that her release could be traded for testimony, particularly under the shadow of political interference, is both an insult to survivors and a direct threat to the integrity of our justice system.
Her push for clemency comes as the Trump administration continues to block efforts to release the full Epstein files, raising serious questions about who is being protected and why. I will not stop fighting for full transparency and will continue opposing any effort to grant clemency to Ghislaine Maxwell.

This week, in my capacity as Ranking Member of the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party, I joined Foreign Affairs Committee Ranking Member Gregory Meeks in demanding answers from Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick about the Trump administration’s decision to use export controls on advanced AI chips as bargaining chips in trade talks with China. Export controls are essential national security tools, especially when it comes to stopping the Chinese Communist Party from using U.S. technology to launch cyberattacks, strengthen its military, and tighten its grip on the global economy. Weakening these safeguards not only puts American security at greater risk, it also hands the CCP new tools for economic coercion. The administration made this dangerous concession without securing anything in return.
Even more troubling, the decision to reverse restrictions on NVIDIA’s H20 chip came just days after a private White House meeting between President Trump and the company’s CEO without consulting the Departments of Defense, Commerce, State, or Energy. That’s not how we protect our national interests or defend American innovation. I’ll keep fighting to ensure export controls serve their true purpose: protecting the American people, our security, and our economic future. The Congressional App Challenge is the official computer science competition of the U.S. House of Representatives. Since its launch in 2013, more than 50,000 students from 374 congressional districts across all 50 states and five U.S. territories have participated, making it the largest student coding competition in the nation. This competition is a unique opportunity to develop coding skills, unleash creativity, and design innovative solutions to real-world challenges.
