I remember on this day, 2022, when the results came in: 59% to 41%.
The constitutional amendment that would have eliminated the right to an abortion in Kansas had FAILED.
After the Dobbs Decision overturned Roe v. Wade and tore down the longstanding rights to privacy and choice, the future of reproductive care across the United States was uncertain.
The Kansas amendment was the first time that ANY American would have a chance to respond, and Republican extremists in our state did all they could to skew the vote:
🗳️ Lawmakers put the vote in the primary election, which typically has low turnout and usually excludes unaffiliated voters.
🗳️ There wasn't a presidential or other major national race on the ballot.
🗳️ Initially, the language on the ballot was so confusing that folks couldn't figure out what a "yes" would even mean!
But with the Kansas Democrats, a huge number of community leaders, organizations, and people like you came together to keep voters informed and urge them to show up to the polls—and Kansas chose reproductive freedom!
It was a landslide win that showed that as Kansans, we could make the best decisions for ourselves and for our families and that lawmakers need to be listening to US.
Today, despite that vote in 2022, the battle to preserve reproductive freedom continues. John, will you join our work to continue electing pro-choice candidates up and down the ballot in Kansas?
