Tonight, I proudly cast my vote in support of the Justice in Policing Act of 2020. This bill provides federal funds to expand community policing, funding for community oversight boards, bans racial profiling, and bans chokeholds and carotid holds.
We can change the system and provide critical services like the White Bird Clinic's Cahoots (Crisis Assistance Helping Out On The Streets) program in Eugene, Oregon, a non-profit that provides 24/7 mobile crisis intervention services.
This isn't easy. Not when Trump fabricates conspiracy theories where there are facts. And certainly not when House Republicans stonewall and delay critical votes to hold law enforcement accountable.
But we must do everything that we can to get at the root of these systemic issues. To deliver on long-overdue housing justice, environmental justice, educational justice, and economic justice so everyone in this country can live a safe, prosperous life free from systematic racism and oppression.
This is a good start. But we have much further to go.
Onward,
Peter
