General Newsletter From the Office of Senator Andy Kim

Hello New Jersey!

Hope you all enjoyed celebrating New Jersey Day this Sunday as much as we did! In last week’s newsletter, we asked you all to share your favorite New Jersey pictures and you delivered. We couldn’t fit all of the incredible submissions into one post but take a look at some of our favorites in the video below!

WATCH HERE.

Working for New Jersey:

While Sentor Kim was in New Jersey last weekend, he had the opportunity to visit the South Jersey Port in Paulsboro and discuss how the maritime industry helps support local job growth. Speaking with local leaders, including Assemblyman Dave Bailey and Mayor Giovannitti, the group spoke about how to use the port’s full potential in innovative ways to boost the region’s economy.

SUPPORTING COASTAL COMMUNITIES:

Senator Kim also met with local leaders and advocates in coastal communities in South Jersey to discuss the impact of increasingly intense flooding and storms. Communities like these need federal support more than ever. Senator Kim will continue to use his role as ranking member of the Disaster Management Subcommittee to support federal disaster response and ensure communities across our state facing extreme weather have the support and resources they need.

BRINGING NEW JERSEY VOICES TO THE SENATE:

Earlier this month Senator Kim visited the Zufall Health Center and talked with both doctors and patients about the critical services they provide. Throughout the last week, we’ve been telling the stories of Zufall patients, and how Medicaid has helped them. After Republicans voted to slash healthcare funding in their Big Disastrous Bill, it is more important than ever that we tell these stories.

Working for you at the Capitol:

SENATOR KIM HELPS ADVANCE HISTORIC HOUSING WINS:

This week, multiple bipartisan bills Senator Kim led to address the housing affordability crisis passed a major hurdle on their way toward the Senate floor for a final vote. During a Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee hearing, Senator Kim voted to advance a bipartisan agreement, including his Unlocking Housing Supply Through Streamlined and Modernized Reviews Act and the BUILD Housing Act

We know that New Jerseyans are struggling with housing costs, and supply is simply not meeting demand. That’s why Senator Kim supported legislation to build more, lower costs, and create affordable paths to owning a home for more Americans.

The entire package passed unanimously and is the first major housing bill to advance in the Senate in nearly two decades. Learn more here.

ENDING SUMMER HUNGER:

For far too many, summer break also means summer hunger. That’s unacceptable.

In New Jersey, 1 in 7 kids come from a food insecure household, but only 15% of kids who get a free meal at school, receive them during the summer. That’s why Senator Kim introduced his Summer Meals REACH Act this week, a bill he first introduced as a member of the House of Representatives, to expand access to summer meals for all kids no matter their zip code.

Across New Jersey and our country, local and state organizations go above and beyond to fill in gaps and connect kids with nutritious meals over the summer months. This legislation would help them reach even more communities and set up summer meal programs for long-term success that will change children’s lives.

HONORING THE BUFFALO SOLDIERS:

Senator Kim also introduced bipartisan legislation this week to award the Buffalo Soldiers Congress’s highest honor. The “Buffalo Soldiers” were all-Black regiments who, over the course of 85 years, served in a variety of peacetime and combat roles. Created during a time of segregation in the U.S. military and over their decades of service, they faced bigotry and discrimination and broke down barriers for future generations as they demanded civil rights.

As we look toward the 250th anniversary of our nation next year, this is a way we can uplift the service and heroes who got us here and recognize our Buffalo Soldiers for their impact on the course of history.

WE ARE HERE FOR YOU:

Thank you for giving us the opportunity to serve you in the United States Senate. It is an honor and a responsibility we do not take lightly. We know these are difficult times, and we will continue to fight for everyone across the state of New Jersey and stand ready to serve you however we can.
