Federal immigration enforcement swarmed Ambridge late Thursday, working with local officers to arrest 12 people. It was the latest development in ICE’s increasing regional activity as the agency carries out President Trump’s agenda of detaining and deporting undocumented immigrants.


“This is the most intense thing we have ever seen,” said Jaime Martinez, who tracks ICE enforcement for nonprofit Casa San José. He said a family with small children was split up and people were taken from a supermarket.


Ambridge’s police chief said his department — which does not have a formal agreement with the federal agency — stands ready to “assist ICE if they ask us.”
