We Must Find Vanessa Guillen
The search for a missing Fort Hood soldier.
LULAC has committed to matching up to $25,000 as a reward for information that
leads to finding Vanessa Guillen, a missing Fort Hood soldier. This was announced
in a virtual press conference [ [link removed] ] with U.S.
Representative Sylvia Garcia of Houston, Texas and the Guillen family. Read the
full story here [ [link removed] ] .

Press Conference on DACA Decision
A day to celebrate and remember.
On June 18, the Supreme Court of the United States announced its decision that
the Department of Homeland Security’s actions to end DACA were arbitrary and
capricious. Justices Roberts, Ginsburg, Breyer, Sotomayor, and Kagan issued their
legal opinion that the Trump administration violated the laws governing federal
agencies when it moved to end DACA
That same day, LULAC held a virtual press conference to commemorate the Supreme
Court decision by listening to several of our own DACA recipients. Together, we
called for a continued push to vote in this year’s election, and for a permanent
legal status solution for Dreamers and their families. Our speakers included:
* Domingo Garcia, LULAC National President & Author of First DREAM Act law in
Texas
* Sindy Benavides, LULAC National Chief Executive Officer
* Andres Rodriguez, LULAC National Vice-President for Young Adults
* DACA Recipients: Delma Gorostieta, Jose Barrera, Maria Yepez, Julio Acevedo,
and Jorge Reyes-Salinas.
Watch it on Facebook [ [link removed] ] or

more about LULAC’s response to the decision in our official statement [ [link removed] ] .

In Support of Black Lives Matter
Juneteenth with LULAC El Paso District IV
In El Paso, LULAC District IV Director, Mary Yanez, organized a press conference
with local members and Pastor Michael Grady. Together, they spoke of the need for
action against racism and the importance of Black and Brown solidarity through
resource sharing and collaboration. Pastor Grady is a veteran, past President of
the NAACP El Paso Chapter, and father of a daughter named Michelle -- who was
fatally shot in the El Paso Shooting at Walmart on August 3rd [ [link removed] ] .

A Continued Fight for LGBTQ Rights
Over the past couple of weeks, we saw a clear contrast of two actions impacting
the LGBTQ community. First, a cruel act by the Trump administration [ [link removed] ]
to end protections from discrimination of transgender patients. Then, a Supreme
Court decision [ [link removed] ]
to uphold LGBTQ protections from discrimination in every workplace.
This is why LULAC is still committed to fighting for LGBTQ Rights as an essential
part of our advocacy. Sindy Benavides, LULAC National CEO, says, “We will
continue to fight and dismantle discrimination in any form until every person can
live freely and without judgement. We will continue to fight for an America that
is inclusive and embraces all forms of diversity.”

National HIV Testing Day
Let’s Stop HIV Together
On this June 27th, National HIV Testing Day, LULAC would like to encourage our
community to get tested and get to #KnowYourStatus. National HIV Testing Day is
an awareness opportunity dedicated to raise consciousness about the importance of
HIV testing and early HIV diagnosis. Getting tested and knowing your status can
reduce the risk of transmission and increase treatment effectiveness, if the test
results show positive.
Sindy Benavides, LULAC CEO says the primary barriers for HIV testing and
healthcare in Latino communities are, “Poverty, migration patterns, lower
education levels, and language barriers.” LULAC believes it is important to
increase early testing within our communities to decrease the number of positive
diagnoses later among Latinos.
We want our LULAC family to know about the many resources available to help treat
and prevent HIV, such as free HIV tests and educational programs. On this
National HIV Testing Day, get tested for HIV and Know your status for your
well-being. The only way to be sure of your status is by getting tested!
Promote testing to your family and friends by using the hashtags #NHTD &
#HIVTestingDay!
