Answering Your Top 3 Questions About Trump's Presidential Fitness Test

What Exactly Is the Presidential Fitness Test?

Alright, let’s go back a bit.

The Presidential Fitness Test has been around since 1956. That’s right—it was first introduced by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Back then, the big worry was that American kids weren’t as physically fit as their peers in other countries. So, the government decided to do something about it by adding physical challenges to school gym classes.

These weren’t just simple stretches or jumping jacks. The original test was tough and included things like:

  • A one-mile run
  • Pull-ups or a flexed-arm hang (for kids who couldn’t do pull-ups)
  • Sit-ups
  • Shuttle run (a sprint back and forth between lines)
  • Sit-and-reach (to test flexibility)
  • Later, right-angle push-ups were added too

Basically, this test was meant to measure how physically fit a student was—not just how active they were, but how they performed under pressure.
