Dear Friend,

It’s Joe Courtney. Here to share an update the latest news from eastern Connecticut and more from the week. As always, thanks for starting your weekend here with me.

Joining National Guard Servicemembers & Families

Connecticut's National Guard servicemembers carry out a wide-ranging sercurity mission at home and abroad, which includes serving alongside active duty servicemembers in overseas deployments. They are the "Swiss Army Knife" of our state.

Last Friday, I had the honor of joining a Connecticut National Guard send-off and "welcome home" ceremony at Bradley Air Base with Guard servicemembers, their families, Major General Francis Evon, and state leaders.

The 242nd Engineering Construction Management Team returned from Jordan and the 103rd Airlift Wing and Air Control Squadron are deploying for missions in Africa and the Middle East. Thank you to these servicemembers and their families for their service and sacrifice.

Amid Massive Cuts in the "Big Beautiful Bill", Medicaid and Medicare Turn 60-years-old

This Wednesday marked 60 years since President Lyndon B. Johnson and Congress dramatically expanded health care access for seniors and patients in need by establishing the Medicaid and Medicare programs.

Medicaid and Medicare are a lifeline for millions of Americans. President Trump promised to “love and cherish” the programs, but unfortunately, the "Big Beautiful Bill", which he signed into law last month, will make the largest Medicaid cut in U.S. history and will also trigger Medicare cuts of $500 billion.

The cuts to Medicaid in the Big Beautiful Bill will eliminate health care coverage for over 10 millions Americans and put hospitals’ finances on brink. I have heard directly from hospitals in Connecticut's 2nd District that they will be forced to scale back services for all patients due to the drastic cuts to Medicaid.

This is a violation of the promise that was made to Americans 60 years ago. I will continue fighting to restore it.

The Vernon Senior Center Expansion Breaks Ground

Good news in Vernon. Last week, construction on the Vernon senior center expansion project got underway. The expansion will bring more programming with more space for seniors to stay healthy and active.

The project is made possible by $1.87 million in federal funding that Congress passed and allocated to Vernon back in 2021 as part of the American Rescue Plan Act. It's another smart use of the funding to strengthen healthy, vibrant communities in Connecticut's 2nd District.
