Hi there,
This week, I stood in Hicksville alongside immigrants from Honduras, El Salvador, and other countries who have lived and worked on Long Island for decades under Temporary Protected Status (TPS).
TPS recipients have done everything right. They came here legally after disasters in their home countries, followed the law, and paid taxes. Many of them work 6 days a week and go to church on Sundays. They’re here to achieve the American Dream, just like my family did many decades ago. Now, TPS recipients are at risk.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I support securing the border and deporting violent criminals. But targeting people who have lived here legally for decades is too far.
We need a system that secures the border and treats people like human beings. That’s why I’ve been leading the charge for bipartisan immigration reform in Congress. It’s why I’ve been calling for a coalition of businesses, badges, and the Bible to get this done. We’ve got to get this right.
