I wanted to send you an update about the American Mobilization Project. I started this effort earlier this year to fund citizen protest all over the country.
We just announced funding for three more local organizations in North Carolina, Wisconsin, and South Dakota that are going to mobilize against the GOP cuts to health care and kids’ food aid.
The Republican budget bill — which throws 17 million people off their health care in order to fund a giant tax cut for the wealthy — is wildly unpopular. But the tough reality is, not enough Americans know about it. These three groups are going to do the hard citizen-to-citizen work of education and mobilization.
Down Home North Carolina is organizing their state to protect public schools and health care and build a future where people come first, not the powerful.
South Dakota Rural Voters is organizing farmers, farming communities, and working people to fight back against Republicans’ devastation of rural hospitals, health care, radio stations, and SNAP.
We’re also partnering with Raìces Acciòn to make sure Wisconsin’s Latino community knows what Trump and Republicans are doing through grassroots mobilization, canvassing, and training bilingual organizers.
Our partners get not just funding, but also logistical support, and we’re not close to finished here. We’re looking for more local organizations with deep roots in their communities that just need a bit more funds to execute important organizing work — like deep canvassing. It’s critical work that we know makes a difference but far too often lacks sustained institutional support from the Democratic Party or other national funding.
I know it may seem strange for an elected official to focus on giving away money to other organizations. But when the status quo is so clearly broken, I think a moment like this demands a different approach.
For me, the essential question for Democratic leaders is this: do you think this political moment is frenzied but still normal, and thus our job is to use our tried and true political tactics to make Trump as deservedly unpopular as possible so that we win back levers of power in 2026; or, do you think this moment is without precedent, and that Trump’s assault on democracy is so serious that all our work must be directed not just toward winning the 2026 election, but making sure there is a free, fair election in 2026.
I count myself in the latter category. I believe that Trump’s corruption and authoritarianism are existential threats to American democracy.
That’s why I decided to create the American Mobilization Project — something that no other federal elected official is doing. If you support my efforts here, please consider using this link to make a contribution:
