The August Papers

This month, throughout the August District Work Period, I want to take some time to highlight my work on the Committee on Appropriations. Each year, the Committee on Appropriations works to pass 12 bills that cover the spending policy of the American government. As a member of the Committee, I have the honor of working alongside my fellow Appropriators to advocate for Mississippi and Trump’s America First Agenda.

Throughout August, I wanted to give you some insight into how the Appropriations process works and what I do to advocate for the Third Congressional District of Mississippi. As we work through all 12 of the bills over the course of August, I hope to give you a better idea about my work on the Committee on Appropriations.

Mississippi has long played a key role on the Committee on Appropriations. From 1979 to 1993, Tallahatchie County native, Representative Jaime L. Whitten served as the Chairman of the Committee. Rep. Whitten has the distinguished honor of being the longest serving member of Congress from Mississippi. He was elected in 1941 and served until 1993 and was the last remaining member of Congress to retire having served under President Franklin D. Roosevelt. To read more about Rep. Jamie Whitten, click here.

With the long history that Mississippi has on the Committee on Appropriations, I have been honored to pick up the mantle and serve where others from Mississippi have served before me. I do not take my role on the Committee lightly and am always looking for ways to put Mississippi’s priorities in front of the Committee.

This week’s eNewsletter will highlight the Homeland Security Appropriations Bill for Fiscal Year 2026.

As a member of the Committee on Homeland Security, I have the unique opportunity to work on both the appropriations side and authorizing side of the Homeland Security process. This means that I have input on where funds go, and I also work to ensure that those funds are used in the correct way through my position on the Committee on Homeland Security.
