Can you use your preps when you need them? Can your family?

I'll never forget it. I was on a course, paired up with a stranger, and we were taking part in timed survival drills out in the boondocks of the Midwest. We got along well and worked well together, and we were having fun and learning a lot.

Then something pivotal (at least for me) happened.

We were told to pretend we had just a few minutes to bring some water to a boil, and then we had to immediately get moving again. There was plenty of fuel in the forested area, between twigs, leaves, and fallen sticks. But my buddy went to set up the little stove she'd brought. It had what seemed like ten thousand pieces and four pages of instructions. She'd never used it. I'd never used the stove in my backpack either. We spent our entire allotted time just trying to assemble the stupid things.

Not only did that make me a far less gadget-dependent prepper, but it also made me follow one engraved-in-stone rule. I cannot plan on using a prep in an emergency unless I've used it in a non-emergency. Preferably more than once.

The same can hold true for so many things.

Getting ready to evacuate - good grief, I'll never forget the panic in my neighborhood when a wildfire was rapidly approaching and some of the folks nearby hadn't even considered getting ready to leave.

Heading to a storm cellar - tornadoes blow up fast, and unless you've practiced, you may forget important things, or worse yet, have someone run off in the wrong direction.

Escaping the house during a fire - so many horrible things can go wrong here - we've all heard those stories about someone going back in to look for a family member who's already out because they didn't set a family meeting place in the event of a fire.

Of course, we're all busy people, right?
