I'm excited to invite you to a special multi-part event hosted by WAVE Educational Fund: a screening and discussion of American Coup: Wilmington 1898. This powerful film uncovers a pivotal moment in our nation’s past that had been deliberately erased, yet continues to shape our present.

I hope you’ll join us as we explore the legacy of racial violence and white supremacy — and how these forces still show up in our politics and public safety systems today.

The documentary tells the little-known story of the only coup d’état in the history of the US. Self-described white supremacists used intimidation and violence to destroy Black political and economic power and overthrow Wilmington’s democratically-elected, multi-racial government.

Here’s how it works

When you sign up, you’ll receive:
✅ A private link on August 5th to stream the film on your own time (available for one week)
✅ A link to join a live group viewing and panel discussion on Zoom on August 13th

The August 13th event will include an opportunity to view the film together, beginning at 5:15 p.m. If you watched the film with the link you received earlier, you can join us later, at 7:00 p.m., for a panel discussion that reflects on what the documentary tells us about democracy, race, and power today. 

Whether you prefer to watch on your own or experience it with others, we’ll be creating space for learning, growth, and conversation.
