Hi John,

Summer is finally here! I’m looking forward to getting outside, spending long days by the river, and lounging in the sun with a good book—including OLCV’s next Book Club pick!

This time around, we’ll be reading Saving Big Creek by local author Andrea Scharf. This fascinating book tells the story of one of Oregon’s most unique coastal ecosystems, and how it was saved from being turned into a multi-million dollar resort. You may be wondering—what/where is Big Creek? This twelve-mile stream starts in the Siuslaw National Forest, to the west of Eugene. From there, it weaves through the foggy Coast Range, between sitka spruce, and thickets of alder. And then something remarkable happens: Big Creek broadens into a freshwater marsh, just before it reaches the sea. Fish have adapted to this rare ecosystem, creating unique subspecies. Big Creek is also an important home for salmon, elk, and the endangered species of butterfly that helped save this ecosystem for future generations.

Happy reading, and happy summer!

OLCV wins environmental policy fights and elections because of dedicated activists like you, and we’d hate to see you go.
