“This is a political consultant’s dream, because your message is just one thing, and that’s ‘No.’”
That was a direct quote from a Republican political consultant regarding the retention elections for three PA Supreme Court justices set to take place in November, fellow activist.
As a reminder, three PA Supreme Court justices (elected as Democrats) are seeking to retain their seats after their ten-year term. PA has non-partisan judicial retention elections. On Election Day in PA, voters will vote “yes” or “no” to decide whether to keep these justices on the bench. If MAGA is successful with their anti-retention campaign, the PA Supreme Court could have three vacancies until the Governor can appoint and confirm their replacements (which is unlikely, as this would require support from Republicans in the PA Senate) or until the next judicial election in 2027.
As Metro Philadelphia recently reported, Republicans see these elections as their best chance to reverse our Democratic majority on the PA Supreme Court and establish a MAGA-controlled court. This would have a drastic impact on the future of PA: “This would pave the way for very different judicial decisions. Many of the court’s recent election-related rulings were made on narrow 4-3 votes that could swing differently if the composition of the court changes.”
State supreme courts are critical – which is why the GOP is working overtime to replace Democrat-elected justices ahead of the 2026 presidential elections. State supreme courts impact everything from voting rights to reproductive rights, environmental protections, redistricting, and much more. There are only 100 days left until Election Day, and we need to ensure that voters in PA understand what’s at stake.
We have good news: thanks to a generous donor, all donations of up to $50,000 from now until the end of the month will be doubled to help us reach our centered communities in these final months. We will need all hands on deck to reach historically disenfranchised Black, Indigenous, and other people of color, immigrant communities, and the youth, and ensure they have everything they need to make their voices heard. Will you rush a doubled donation now to support our critical voter education and mobilization work ahead of this year’s judicial elections?
