Dear John,
I want to start by saying a big thank you to everyone who helped make the mass lobby such a special event earlier this month. Thousands of us gathered in Westminster to meet MPs and demand action on the climate and nature crises.
My favourite quote of the day was this: "Coming here and being able to speak to our MP, somebody who can really make a difference, really gives you a feeling that we’re not powerless. There really are things that we can do."
If you couldn't make it, there’s still something powerful you can do: email your MP to demand a bold, fair climate plan this October ( [link removed] ). And be inspired by the full story in pictures below.

Help us to shape a more inclusive future for the environmental movement
Our movement is for everyone, so we’re really excited to be working with the University of Glasgow to explore diversity and inclusion within Friends of the Earth. PhD researcher Molly Coyle has put together a survey to find out what you think. The research is funded by the Scottish Graduate School of Social Sciences along with Friends of the Earth England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
No matter how involved you are with Friends of the Earth, we’d love to hear your views. The survey is completely anonymous, with an option at the end to take part in a follow-up focus group talking about the topics in more detail. The survey runs until Friday 15 August and takes around 10 minutes – if you have a moment, we’d love to hear your thoughts.

A new law protecting forests and people – they're listening
UK companies often rely on supply chains that are really destructive – damaging nature and wrecking the lives of people globally. We’ve been campaigning to put a stop to this.
So we were pleased to see that the government's new Trade Strategy includes a commitment to review the impact of business practices on people and planet. This means they're listening to us and it opens the door for better protection of human rights and nature from corporate cowboys.
But it’s only a first step. The review must lead to a new law that holds UK companies to account for destruction in their supply chains. You can help by asking your MP to support the law today.

Join us for the Make Them Pay demonstration
Big businesses and super-polluters are profiting, while the rest of us and the planet deal with the consequences. It’s only right they pay their fair share. On Saturday 20 September, people across the UK will come together to demand that those responsible for climate breakdown and rising inequality pay up.
If you’d like to join us at the Make Them Pay demonstration in London, register your interest and we’ll share more details about the demonstration as our plans develop.

Incredible victory by Friends of the Earth Sri Lanka
In 2021, the X Press Pearl ship caught fire off the coast of Sri Lanka and sank. What came after was the island’s worst marine environmental disaster ever ( [link removed] ). Billions of plastic pellets, along with tonnes of toxic engine fuel and industrial chemicals, spilled out into the waters and beaches. Volunteers are still sifting kilogrammes of plastic from beaches today.
Since then, Friends of the Earth Sri Lanka (the Centre for Environmental Justice ( [link removed] )) has been fighting for justice, alongside representatives of fishing communities, whose livelihoods continue to be severely harmed by the disaster. And we’ve just found out they’ve won.
The Sri Lankan Supreme Court has ruled against the ship's owner and authorities responsible for the disaster and ordered compensation of US$1 billion. The fight for justice isn't over yet. But this is a brilliant example of ordinary people holding strong against powerful economic interests, to bring justice for people and the environment. Well done!
What’s solidarity and why does it matter?
As an organisation fighting for global justice for the environment and people, solidarity around shared values is integral to what we do.
But what is solidarity, why is it so important and what are some of the ways we practice it? Our article explains all:

Thanks for reading this month’s news round up. We'll be in touch again soon.
