From executive orders to rollbacks of safeguards, the Trump Administration has two obvious goals: Deny climate science and unplug clean energy so its friends in the fossil fuel industry can keep making billions. Just this week, they announced a proposal to rescind the endangerment finding — the backbone of federal climate regulation.

1. EPA EMISSIONS ROLLBACKS PUT FOSSIL FUELS FIRST

On June 11, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) proposed a rollback of greenhouse gas emissions standards from fossil fuel plants.

Why this matters? The US power sector is the second-largest source of US climate pollution. To put that in perspective — if the US power sector was a country, it would be the sixth largest emitting country in the world as of 2022! That is, in fact, significant.

Denial is not a policy. Tell the EPA that protections from fossil fuel pollution are crucial by submitting a public comment by the August 7 deadline.

2. BASIC SCIENCE FUNDING SLASHED BY MORE THAN A THIRD

Basic scientific research is how breakthroughs begin. It’s exploratory science that lays the foundation for major advances in health, technology, and climate solutions.

The Trump Administration’s proposed budget would cut funding for basic scientific research by roughly 34%. That means less discovery, fewer breakthroughs, and a weaker foundation for innovation.

Basic research informs climate solutions that protect our families and communities. These cuts make it easier for climate denial to influence policy and slow progress.

3. SCIENTISTS FIRED, CLIMATE DENIERS HIRED

After firing nearly 400 climate scientists and gutting scientific research funding, the Trump Administration has hired three scientists known for downplaying or rejecting the science behind climate change.

The fact is 97% of scientists agree on the scientific reality of climate change. These three are dangerous outliers who have long histories of pushing misinformation that contradicts the overwhelming consensus of the climate science community.

Hiring three leading voices of the 3% of climate science dissenters is a clear, intentional move on the administration’s part to shift away from credible science and towards climate denial.

4. AS THE ARCTIC BREAKS RECORDS, SCIENCE LOSES GROUND

Climate change is fueling more frequent and intense heat waves around the globe.  The Arctic is one of the fastest-warming locations on the planet. In May, Greenland’s ice sheet melted 17 times faster than usual due to record-breaking heat.

Even a small change in ice melt can have big impacts. Faster ice melt adds more freshwater to oceans, slowing ocean currents and destabilizing weather patterns across the globe.

The current administration is slashing funding for critical climate science that monitors warming in the Arctic. Science on sea ice and arctic currents is crucial for understanding climate change and extreme weather across the globe.
