Content warning: This email discusses a murder and police violence.
John, today would have been Tamir Rice’s 18th birthday.
Instead, Tamir had his young life cut short at the hands of police officer Timothy Loehmann who murdered Tamir within seconds on the scene.
Timothy Loehman should have never had a job with the Cleveland police. In fact, he was deemed an emotionally unstable recruit and unfit for duty in his previous role as an officer in Independence, OH.
A system that allows people like Loehman to patrol the streets is a system that is inherently broken. And it is a system that continues to take the lives of Black people every day. Our mission is to build new systems for real justice in our communities, and that work starts at the local level by electing prosecutors who believe in police accountability and transparency.
We’re working every day to elect transformative prosecutors to districts and counties across the country. But we need your help today to support our endorsed candidates. This month we set a goal to raise $30,000 in order to scale our organizing program in support of our candidates.
Can you make a $5 contribution right now to get us there?
The prosecutor assigned to Tamir’s case, Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Tim McGinty, fumbled the case against Loehman by first assigning pro-police experts to the investigation.
Tamir Rice should be alive today, and his murderer should have been brought to justice. But instead the County Prosecutor upheld the pro-police status quo and Tamir’s murderer is free today.
This cannot continue to happen. If we want to end police violence, we need to elect prosecutors who will fight for our communities and work to dismantle the systemic racism that plagues our justice systems.
We can do that today with your help. Can you make a contribution right now to support our work to end systemic racism in criminal justice and build fairer legal systems in our country?
Tamir Rice should be alive today, and so should countless others. It’s time to reimagine what public safety can and should look like in our country. And we can do that by electing transformative prosecutors now.
Thank you for all you do for our movement.
