Assisted Suicide Not Understood By Most Americans |
Billy Barvick, Research Associate at Aging with Dignity, writes, "The legislative statutes and current method of data collection prevent American citizens from understanding the true harms of [assisted suicide]. The statutes’ inability to close multiple loopholes shows an utter disregard for the wellbeing of America’s most vulnerable, and the lack of clarity in the data inhibits the ability to have an open conversation about PAS. Ultimately, this distracts from care-centered discussions on issues like advance care planning and hospice or palliative care."

In April, the New York State Assembly passed, by a close vote of 81-67, dangerous and discriminatory assisted suicide legislation. During the last week of session, on Monday, June 9th, the New York State Senate approved assisted suicide by a vote of 35-27. A slim majority over the necessary 32 votes for passage. New Film on Assisted Suicide Available Now |
Progressives Against Medical Assisted Suicide (PAMAS) now has a new 36-minute film, "Thoughts on Medical Assisted Suicide," which is available for viewing online from Wednesday July 23rd through Wednesday July 30th. The 36-minute film, recently produced by Progressives Against Medical Assisted Suicide (PAMAS) and Karyl Evans Productions LLC, considers the historical context, current practice, and impact on health care of enabling medical providers to offer lethal drugs to patients for the purpose of ending their own lives.

Harry Painter, a writer for the Heartland Institute, quotes Tim Millea, "Assisted suicide, whether provided by a physician or any other medical professional, is antithetical to the ethics and morality of medicine. The goal and function of the practice of medicine is to maintain health and treat disease. Making someone dead certainly does not benefit their health, and diseases are not treated by purposely ending the life of the person suffering." |

John Unsworth, registered nurse and Professor of Community Nursing Workforce and Policy at Northumbria University, writes "Proponents of the Bill have argued that it would give competent adults within England and Wales, with six months or less to live, a choice of an assisted [suicide]. However, the current state of palliative care and community health services means that choice for many people is already severely limited." |

We’ve joined a federal lawsuit in Colorado with a coalition of national and Colorado-based disability and patient advocacy organizations - Atlantis ADAPT, United Spinal Association, Not Dead Yet, the Institute for Patients’ Rights, and Mary Gossman, a woman with anorexia.
The plaintiffs argue the Colorado assisted suicide law violates core protections under the U.S. Constitution and federal civil rights laws, including the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. |
