The Big Betrayal:

What Happened—And What Comes Next

 Tonight - Tuesday, July 30
8pm ET // 7pm CT // 6pm MT // 5pm PT

Dear Friend ,

The National Coalition for the Homeless is proud to co-sponsor a powerful livestream event tonight marking the 60th anniversary of Medicaid and Medicare—and we want you there.

Together with national partners like People’s Action Institute, National Domestic Workers Alliance, Community Change, Popular Democracy, and Kairos Center, we’re unpacking the devastating budget passed by Congress—and organizing to fight back.

This so-called “Big Beautiful Bill” is really The Big Ugly Betrayal:

❌ Slashes Medicaid, housing, food assistance, and education
❌ Hands billions in tax breaks to billionaires, corporations, and private prison contractors
❌ Funnels $40 billion to ICE and Border Patrol to expand raids, detention, and anti-immigrant surveillance

Tonight's livestream is a chance to hear directly from movement leaders, impacted people, union organizers, and elected officials about what’s in the bill, why it passed, and what we must do next to fight forward.

Join us tonight to make meaning, build power, and prepare for action this August and beyond.

This is about more than one bill—it’s about our future. Let’s make sure we fight for it, together.

Executive Order Misrepresents the Experience of Homelessness and Does Nothing to Offer Solutions

By now you have probably heard about the Executive Orders signed by the President last week that claim institutionalizing people experiencing homelessness will make our communities safer. Nothing could be further from the truth - HOUSING solves Homelessness and HOUSING makes us all safer!

In short, the order will:

  • De-fund lifesaving, evidence-based approaches to stabilization such as Housing First and Harm Reduction – long established best practices that are shown to produce positive outcomes
  • Shift the focus away from the need to address the systemic causes of homelessness – the lack of affordable housing and a workforce trying to make ends meet on wages drastically misaligned with housing costs
  • Encourages the criminalization of homelessness in lieu of focusing on evidence-based strategies and long-term solutions
  • Calls for the involuntary civil commitment (forced inpatient treatment) of people experiencing homelessness who have mental health conditions or substance use disorders, instead of expanding support available in the community
  • Threatens funding of states and municipalities who do not engage in such criminalization and involuntary hospitalization practices “to the maximum extent of the law”
  • Uses language that seeks to capitalize on the deep-seeded stigma that already exists against our most vulnerable neighbors rather than calling for a compassionate response rooted in data-driven strategy

To build communities that are truly safe for all of us, we need to invest in housing that is affordable to our lowest-income neighbors, health care that is affordable and meets our needs, and crisis interventions that are proven to save lives. The President's executive order does nothing to address the severe lack of low-cost housing that that has been growing since the 1980's.
