Today marks the 60th birthday of Medicare and Medicaid, two great American triumphs. Millions of Americans have led longer, healthier, happier lives thanks to these two programs.

Children can see doctors when they’re sick. Seniors are cared for in nursing homes. People are able to get treatment for addiction and mental health issues.

But Trump’s Big, Beautiful-for-Billionaires bill rips the rug out from under Medicaid AND Medicare. The new law is the biggest threat to these programs in their 60 years.

The miserable Medicaid cuts have deservedly received a lot of attention. But what’s less well-known is how Trump’s law will take a big bite out of Medicare: those trillions in tax giveaways for billionaires are set to explode the deficit and trigger a process called “sequestration” — billions of dollars in mandatory cuts to Medicare.

It’s a grift. Republicans have sacrificed the health and happiness of their own constituents to serve the billionaires and polluters who bankroll their campaigns.

We’re up against a massive effort to rig the system for the ultra-wealthy. If we’re going to stop Donald Trump and his billionaire cronies from further hollowing out our democracy and economy, we need to take back the Senate and change the law to reverse these cuts and actually EXPAND Medicare.

This is a tough fight. But we can win if we hang together.
