Today marks the 60th anniversary of Medicare and Medicaid, two programs that have transformed healthcare access for vulnerable populations and supported local economies across the nation. Created through law by President Lyndon B. Johnson on July 30, 1965, Medicare and Medicaid have played a crucial role in providing health insurance for the elderly, individuals with disabilities, and low-income families. Together, Medicare and Medicaid have helped close healthcare gaps, improving access to services and reducing health disparities, especially for seniors and low-income Americans.

The future of Medicaid is uncertain, though. Last week, I joined my fellow State Financial Officers from 4 other states to speak with national media about how devastating the cuts to Medicaid will be to Marylanders, including pregnant women, seniors, and people with disabilities. The state could see 175,000 Marylanders lose access to health insurance, and the state is projected to lose over $2.5 billion annually in funding. Our rural hospitals will be in jeopardy - but so too will some of our hospitals in Baltimore City. Over 40% of births in Maryland are funded through Medicaid. Many local economies rely on healthcare to fuel their growth, and employers depend on a healthy workforce. All of this is now in jeopardy.

I will continue to speak up against these cuts and remind our Republican leaders that not only is cutting Medicaid inhumane, it also represents the height of fiscal irresponsibility—destroying jobs, eliminating federal matching dollars, and undermining the very economic infrastructure that attracts business investment to our state.

As we celebrate this milestone, I remain committed to fighting for these critical programs. We must ensure that healthcare access remains equitable and that Medicare and Medicaid continue to support those who need it most, strengthening both individual well-being and our economy.
