Dear John,
Like you, I was outraged when Nancy Pelosi’s impeachment failed to remove Donald Trump from office. But I wasn’t surprised.
And—in a case of politics making “strange bedfellows”—neither was career warmonger John Bolton.
Bolton, who resigned from Trump’s White House (or was fired, depending on which self-promoting right-wing charlatan one might believe), recently did an NPR interview where he revealed what went wrong:
Pelosi never bothered reaching out to sympathetic Republicans to build a majority, the way Democratic leaders did during Nixon’s impeachment
Pelosi timed her impeachment process with this year’s election, and wouldn’t consider anything that might change that timing—even if it helped her case
Pelosi’s stubborn refusal to focus on anything but one Ukraine phone call, such as Trump’s self-enrichment at public expense and other documented corruption, meant the impeachment was doomed from the outset
Bolton is a neoconservative with the blood of millions of people on his hands. It frankly disgusts me that we agree on anything—but the fact that such disparate voices agree about Pelosi’s failure is revealing. By pulling back the curtain on Pelosi’s charade and revealing her complicity with Trump, Bolton has actually done something helpful to the Republic for once.
Pelosi has never meaningfully challenged Trump! In her world—as a fundraiser for a corporate political party—she wins by pretending to oppose Trump, while leaving him in office as a foil.
It’s frankly worse than that. Pelosi doesn’t just feign “resistance” while failing to walk the talk.
She also actively enables Trump’s agenda. She’s proven all too willing to vote for every bad bill that Trump has signed—from measures extending domestic spying, and expanding bloated defense budgets, to corporatist pandemic “relief” that gives billions to Wall Street and pennies to Main Street.
Pelosi has given us 30 years of empty rhetoric and theatrics—while doing nothing to help working people. Our campaign brings to the table a decade of successful activism in the courts and in the streets. Can you send us to Congress by donating today?
Pelosi’s charade has gone on too long—but we can end it in November.
Half the reason I’m running for Congress is because we need real resistance to a maniacal aspiring tyrant—and a corporate fundraiser is not poised to mount that resistance. As an immigrant Muslim who has successfully fought to expand human rights even during a conservative era, I am.
That’s why we’re replacing Pelosi: to defend our Republic, and fight on behalf working-class Americans against either this criminal president, or his unacceptably conservative successor.
We stand in a proud tradition of Americans waging an intergenerational struggle to defend our founding values in the face of institutional abuses. Thank you for standing with us!
Shahid
