The fight for free and fair elections isn’t over.

John,

On this day in 2013, seven years ago, the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act, upending decades of progress when they struck down key provisions in the VRA in its Shelby County v. Holder decision.

Ever since, states have reverted to discriminatory practices that restrict the voting rights of Black, Latinx, and indigenous people. These unnecessary roadblocks to the ballot look like no online voter registration, voter roll purges, restrictive voter ID laws, excuse requirements for absentee ballots and the closing of polling places.

Today is an important reminder that the fight for free and fair elections where all eligible voters have access to the ballot box continues. When We All Vote’s grassroots movement is working hard to bring more people into the political process and ensure every voice is heard. Will you chip in to support our work?

Your contribution will help train thousands of volunteers across the country so they can help their communities get registered and ready to vote. It will also support our digital organizing efforts to help us reach eligible voters, and ensure our youngest voters are registered to vote before leaving high school with help from our My School Votes program.

In the 15 years before Shelby County v. Holder, the Voting Rights Act blocked 86 election changes that would have further disenfranchised voters. Hundreds more were withdrawn after further Justice Department pushback, and even more were never put forward because they wouldn’t pass.

It’s no secret that there are people in this country who want to make it harder for Americans to vote. Without the Voting Rights Act to protect historically disenfranchised voters, it’s on all of us to step up to defend our democracy by getting registered, voting, holding our elected officials accountable, speaking out against voter suppression, and donating if you can.
