John,

Expedited removal is a process by which low-level immigration officers can quickly deport certain migrants. People subject to this process are not afforded a regular immigration court hearing before a judge—and rarely see the inside of a courtroom.

The Supreme Court just ruled that those subjected to “expedited removal” generally cannot seek judicial review. That means there is no oversight for those who want to challenge the government’s decision.

There are already few checks on the expansive authority of immigration officers to place people in expedited proceedings.

Even worse, the Trump administration is trying to expand expedited removal beyond the border zone to apply to more people nationwide.

The American Immigration Council is currently in the courts challenging this expansion to fight for due process and a fair day in court before deportation.
