Dear John,
He was taken in a workplace raid and never made it home. Her mother was ripped from her arms outside of school by federal agents.
They were grabbed off the street for bearing witness to the abduction of immigrants. Their lives will never be the same. Nor will ours. Every bone in my body screams against the inhumanity of what is happening right now.
We have entered a new era, and our team at Alliance San Diego is working to make sense of it. Over the last week, we have looked at the available data to identify patterns and trends that will help inform our strategy to uplift human dignity and protect human rights. Here’s what we’ve learned:
In 2025, ICE arrests tripled in California. From January to June, ICE arrests in the California-based Areas of Responsibility (AOR) have jumped threefold from about 900 a month to over 3,300. From the beginning of 2025 through June, close to 9,000 people were arrested. The Los Angeles AOR saw a fivefold increase, the biggest nationally, the San Diego AOR saw a fourfold increase, the second biggest, and the San Francisco AOR saw a twofold increase. During this time, ICE arrests also doubled nationwide.

Now, ICE is arresting 130 people daily in California. In June 2025, an average of 85 people were arrested daily from the Los Angeles AOR, 23 from the San Diego AOR, and 23 from the San Francisco AOR. As of June 2025, the daily arrest rate for California is second only to Texas.
On average, 74 people each day are deported from California. 47 people are deported (removed) daily from the San Diego AOR, 16 from the Los Angeles AOR, and 11 from the San Francisco AOR. In total, nearly 13,000 people were deported from California AORs from January to June 2025. Most people (56%) were removed by Border Patrol agents operating throughout California. Other officials involved include Customs and Border Protection agents at land, sea, and airports, as well as ICE.

Californians being deported come from all over the world: Before they built a life here, they came from 125 different countries: For Californians deported from January through June 2025, the top country of origin from North America was Mexico (8,312), from Central America was Guatemala (601), and from South America was Colombia (562). The top country from Asia was India (476), from the Middle East was Turkiye (106), and from the Caribbean was Cuba (77). The top country from Europe was Romania (53), from Oceania was Micronesia (36), and from Africa was Morocco (12). Mexican nationals make up about two-thirds (64%) of the deportees from California.
We are worried about our community of immigrants and those who stand by them. I’m sharing this email to raise consciousness about what’s happening and to whom, and I encourage you to do the same with your family, friends and networks. |
Alliance San Diego is engaged in advocacy with our partners at the local, state, and national levels to turn things around where we can, and in the coming weeks, we will share opportunities to join us in this fight. Until then, remember to check in with family, friends, and neighbors. |
