** BAN THE CONFEDERATE FLAG IN OUR SCHOOLS UPDATE
------------------------------------------------------------

**
Thank you to all of you who wrote letters to the Superintendent and School Board regarding banning the Confederate Flag. Because of your concern to end hatred and oppression in our school system, the Superintendent proposed new language for the district Code of Conduct and presented it to the School Board at the business meeting on Tuesday. The School Board approved the language in a 4-0 vote (Tiffany Justice left the meeting before the vote). It is the start of a new era for our school system.

FLORIDA DEMOCRATS OUT ENROLL REPUBLICANS TO VOTE BY MAIL
------------------------------------------------------------

**
Since the March 17 presidential primary, Florida Democrats have enrolled 350,000 Democrats into vote-by-mail compared to Republicans enrolling 160,000 more GOP voters into vote-by-mail. Democrats now have a 302,000 voter lead in vote-by-mail enrollments. The Democrats of Indian River are doing our part to encourage fellow Democrats to Vote by Mail (VBM) through virtual phone banking. Over 7,600 calls have been made by our volunteers. VBM enrollment exceeds VBM ballot requests in the 2016 election by 3,000.

Five months before Election Day, more than 1.46 million Democrats have signed up to vote by mail compared to 1.16 million Republicans, according to an analysis of state Division of Election data released Friday. By comparison, in 2016, Democrats held an advantage of about 8,800 in vote-by-mail enrollment.

The Florida Democratic Party and the Democrats of Indian River turned to this strategy as the coronavirus pandemic made it clear that in-person voting at the polls can put our fellow Democrats in danger of becoming ill. We are keeping our Democrats safe and our community. We also turned to this method because it allows for a better voter turnout than going to the polls (85% vs. 55%). It also is the safest means of voting and has been used in Indian River County as a voting option since 2002. Finally, because of real concerns over voter suppression, VBM protects the voter to vote at home and at their leisure.

** WHAT ARE WE WORKING ON?
------------------------------------------------------------

**
Our phone bank volunteers continue to make huge progress. They have now made approximately 7,600 phone calls to local Democrats! Thank you to our AWESOME volunteers! Your hard work is definitely paying off.

Our volunteers who have made more than 10 calls will be receiving an incentive present in the mail next week (hint – Biden gear!). We really appreciate our volunteers and their dedication to change the course of our country in November.

With all this progress, we are constantly planning ahead for our next moves. Our initial phone bank was to Warm and New Democrats. We are nearly done with those voters and have transitioned to our next phase of calling Hot Democrats. Additionally, we have created a texting component to the phone banking.

This initiative is constantly evolving but our goal is the same – sign up as many Democrats as possible to Vote By Mail in the August Primary and November General Elections. With the ultimate goal of taking back our Democracy!

The Florida Democratic Seniors Council will be instrumental in getting out the senior vote in every county in Florida. ** INDIAN RIVER MASK ORDINANCE
------------------------------------------------------------

**
Local counties have begun mandating wearing masks to prevent the spread of Covid-19. Jason Brown, Indian River County Administrator, is concerned that just encouraging people to wear a mask is not “doing as good a job as we need”.

You can read more about this at: [link removed]

If you would like to encourage Mr. Brown and the Indian River County Commissioners to implement mandatory public mask wearing, you can email or call them at:

** DEMOCRATIC HEADQUARTERS UPDATE
------------------------------------------------------------

**
The FDP is continuing to authorize DECs, Clubs and caucuses to meet virtually. However, they updated the policy to allow local Democratic party offices to open, if they choose, but the in-person meetings should be implemented using social distancing and business should be conducted swiftly and limited to essential business.

COVID cases are on the rise in Indian River County, like the rest of Florida. The Democrats of Indian River Headquarters will remain closed for in-person meetings within the office space. We will continue to undertake essential activities with Operations Coordinator Stacey Klim on Wednesdays and Fridays 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. Democrats coming to the office should knock on the door, social distance, wear a facemask, and provide their own hand sanitizer. Thank you as we continue to look after the safety of our fellow Democrats.
