In Loving Memory of Benito Flores
|
With deep love, respect and admiration, we mourn the heartbreaking loss of our beloved Reclaimer, Benito Flores. Benito was an active DSA-LA member.
He was one of the last two Reclaimers still standing against the state-sanctioned violence that continues to dispossess our families, friends and communities of their homes. He stood boldly in defense of our collective right to housing, dignity and life.
Benito embodied resilience. He understood that the settler colonial violence we face in Los Angeles is connected to the same violence responsible for the genocide in Palestine. Our struggles are interwoven, born of a system rooted in over 500 years of colonialism. Day after day, he resisted the violence that determines who is allowed to live with dignity.
Long live Benito the "Reclaimer!"
We hold the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles (HACLA), Caltrans, and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department responsible for Benito’s unnecessary and preventable death. This was an act of state-sanctioned violence against one of the most vulnerable among us—an elderly, disabled man who should have been enjoying his retirement, surrounded by love and community.
His death is not an isolated incident—it is the result of a brutal system that criminalizes the poor, the unhoused, the aging, and the disabled.
May his legacy be a call to action.
May his courage live on in all who continue the fight.
- Phil I, DSA-LA Member

Canvass for Stronger Rent Control in Los Angeles
|
Do you believe that rent is too high?
Do you think the rent’s too high? Let’s do something about it by talking with our neighbors about the need for stronger rent control and showing Councilmember Katy Yaroslavsky and Council President Marqueece Harris-Dawson that Angelenos support capping rent increases at 60% of CPI, and never more than 3%.
We’ll have snacks, and we’ll start with a training before pairing up newer canvassers with more experienced canvassers.
