Dear Members and Supporters,
Tomorrow, Wednesday at 7pm, Jeremy Corbyn will address People's Assembly supporters and local groups across the country to speak about the launch of his new political party, “Your Party”.
We welcome a new anti-austerity voice in mainstream politics, but the PA remains a united front open to members of all parties, including Labour and the Greens, SNP, Plaid, and of no party, who oppose austerity.
A New Chapter – Rooted in 12+ Years of Struggle
The formation of a new party by Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana, rooted in anti-austerity, anti-war, anti-racist politics, comes at a time of real crisis and real opportunity.
Let’s not forget: Jeremy was a founding member of the People's Assembly, alongside political giants like Tony Benn. Together with trade unions and community campaigns, we helped build the mass anti-austerity movement that made Jeremy’s leadership of the Labour Party possible.
We mobilised hundreds of thousands on the streets of London, Manchester, Birmingham and beyond. At our height, we had 125 local groups, uniting people in workplaces, food banks, mosques, schools, campaign hubs and housing estates, wherever ordinary people stood up to say “no more cuts”.
We didn't just march. We helped shift the political terrain. We made anti-austerity common sense. We helped popularise policies like free education, public ownership of rail and utilities, proper investment in housing, health and care, and an economy that works for the many, not the few.
Rebuilding the People’s Assembly
We also know what happened. Many activists and campaigners were drawn into Westminster politics after Jeremy became leader. While understandable, the result was a weakening of the extra-parliamentary movement. The streets went quiet. And the establishment pounced.
The right wing of the Labour Party, the media, and powerful elites worked relentlessly to crush that moment. And they succeeded, not because the ideas failed, but because we weren’t strong enough outside Parliament.
That’s the lesson we must learn now.
The People’s Assembly: A Movement, Not a Machine
We are an umbrella movement that brings together trade unions, faith groups, unaffiliated individuals, anti-war campaigners, disabled people’s organisations, community campaigns, and everyone who believes a better world is possible.
We can say what party leaders won’t. We can act when others are constrained. We can organise when others are stuck in bureaucracy.
Tomorrow’s Meeting: Be There
Jeremy Corbyn will speak tomorrow (Wednesday) at 7pm via Zoom to People’s Assembly supporters and local group organisers.
This is one of the first public meetings he’ll address since the new party was announced. He’ll speak about recent developments, and we’ll discuss how we can rebuild local People’s Assembly groups and the vital role we can continue to play moving forward.
Whether you're in a trade union, a tenants' group, a youth club, a food bank, or simply fed up with politics-as-usual, then this meeting is for you.
We can’t afford to repeat past mistakes. We need a movement that’s democratic, grassroots, creative and unafraid, and we need it now.
