Team,
Let me be clearer than the last email — my son Harry started experimenting with alcohol and substances as a teen, and ultimately became addicted to opioids in college. I’m grateful he was able to get the help he needed to be alive, and well, and in long term recovery today.
Far too many families haven’t been so fortunate.
Harry’s story — our family's and others’s — informs my work — especially in the face of Trump and GOP cuts to substance abuse treatment and resources. The CDC reports that from October 2023 to September 2024 there were 87,000 drug overdose deaths. That was down from 114,000 the previous year.
Revealing that what we are doing together is working.
These lives and deaths aren’t just statistics. They are parents, children, friends, neighbors, as well as members of our community.
Addiction is a public health crisis that touches countless American families. I will continue my fight against Donald Trump’s budget cuts to make sure everyone struggling with addiction has the same opportunity and resources to recover as my son Harry did.
We must do better; we must save more lives.
