[[link removed]] Building a better democracy{SALUTATION~DEAR NAME OR FRIEND},
Thanks to your support, I'm proud to say we launched our new report today, Democracy Denied: The 2019 Elections Audit
[[link removed]] .
Voters have gone to the polling stations in their millions this year, in the
European elections and the English local elections.
Both polls showed the public are keen to break out of the ‘traditional’ party
system. But for voters of all parties – the local elections saw democracy
denied: rotten boroughs under a First Past the Post voting system meant that
millions of voters went unrepresented.
Read and share the report [[link removed]]In nearly half of all English local councils, one party was able to secure more
than half of the councillors up for election – despite winning fewer than half
the votes cast.
In Basildon Borough Council, Labour won less than a quarter of the vote – almost
half the Conservatives’ vote tally – yet elected more councillors.
Hundreds of thousands of voters also found themselves represented by people who
hadn’t won a single vote – in the many uncontested seats across England. That’s
not democracy.
As we show, the results in Scotland’s last local elections were far more
representative of public opinion. That’s because they have a fair, proportional
politics where seats match votes.
Read our new audit on the state of elections in 2019 – and help us build a
better democracy.
Best wishes,
Ian Simpson,
