Their survival depends on us. And we need your support so we can stand against inhumane practices and the potential massacre of America’s most iconic mustangs.

The threat of slaughter still looms large — and with the lives of 62,000 wild horses and burros on the line, we need Congress to act.

The President’s FY26 budget proposal could open the door to the mass slaughter of America’s wild horses and burros. If enacted fully, it would put tens of thousands of these iconic animals at risk.

Thankfully, both the Senate and House Appropriations Committee has advanced language to maintain protections. The House allocated $11 million of the BLM’s budget to fertility control, but the Senate maintained the status quo of roundups and removals.

Now, the appropriations process continues at the full House of Representatives and in the Senate, our fight pushes forward. We need to ensure slaughter stays off the table and fertility control is funded. That’s why we’re advocacting for a better way. Here’s how we’re working in Congress and in the field to advance humane alternatives:

* Urging Congress to phase out the holding complex and invest in humane, cost-effective alternatives to manage our wild herds in the wild, where they belong, while phasing out helicopter roundups and holding facilities.
* Proving fertility control is a viable solution over cruel and costly roundups with our humane fertility control programs in Nevada and Utah.
* Advocating for rewilding and repatriating removed horses to their native habitats.
