Racism is an insidious disease in our society. So is poverty. Much of the anger we are now witnessing has as much to do with the lack of opportunity, that many in the Black community constantly experience, as it does with systemic racism. Much of this opportunity gap is caused by our failure to effectively educate so many of their children.

The uniform, age-based U.S. public education system is a poor fit for the nation’s increasingly diverse culture. Public school systems must shift their focus from uniformity to responsiveness and individualization.We have the equation wrong. Currently, in education, time is the constant and achievement is the variable.

Providing students with access to gifted teachers during a longer day and a longer year would create a good chance of keeping kids in school through graduation, ready to secure good jobs or more education.
