John, can I tell you a story? It has to do with this picture:

In 2009, the Iowa Supreme Court unanimously ruled that same-sex marriage was legal. It was an incredible moment for families like mine, who happened to have two moms who loved each other. After being together for nearly fifteen years, they officially tied the knot. I was the best man at their wedding.

But a few short years later, the Iowa legislature moved to amend our state constitution to reverse the Court’s ruling to once again make same-sex marriage illegal.

I was in college at the time, and I got invited to speak out against this bill at a public hearing before the vote. So on the night of January 31, 2011, I jumped into my Pontiac Grand Am and drove off to Des Moines, utterly unaware of what was ahead.

As I stepped up to the podium, my hands were shaking as I tapped the start button on the timer of my iPod Touch and set it down. I had three minutes to make my case.

It wasn’t my goal to go viral. I just wanted to defend my family from those trying to attack it. But my message about love and commitment and what makes a family resonated with people across Iowa and the country.

It’s hard to believe that speech was almost fifteen years ago now — but it is the exact same spirit that took me to Des Moines on that fateful night that is still driving me today. Since that speech, I’ve worked to deliver for Iowa families in the state senate and stand up to the career insiders, bullies, and special interests who are holding our state back.

Now, I’m running for Iowa’s seat in the U.S. Senate. I know we have what it takes to flip this race — but it will be a tough, expensive campaign. Republicans are already attacking me because they know I’m their biggest threat to flipping the Senate.

Which is why I’m humbly asking for your support, John:

Will you split $10 between my campaign and Democratic Values today? I’m ready to fight for your families as hard as I’ve fought for mine — but it’ll take a huge grassroots effort to win. [[link removed]]

If you've saved payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation split between Zach Wahls and Democratic Values will go through immediately:

I’ll leave you with one last thing: My parents taught me that if I saw something wrong, problems didn’t fix themselves. It was on me to roll up my sleeves and get to work.

I am to do the hard work to reach Iowans across the state, win this race, and fight for a better future. Together.

Thanks for reading my story.
