Jack,
I’ve had a front row-seat observing the rise of women in American politics, and more specifically, the rise of women in Texas politics. I watched my own mother, Ann Richards, serve exceptionally as the Governor of Texas. And I’ve had the privilege of working alongside countless other Texas women, each of us striving to create the inclusive, just and fair Texas that we know it can be.
When I think about the history of women in Texas politics, another name, besides my mother’s, comes to mind immediately: Wendy Davis. Seven years ago today, Wendy was a couple hours in to what would become a 13-hour filibuster to protect women’s bodily autonomy from a draconian anti-abortion bill. She uplifted the voices of Texas women, telling their stories and bravely sharing her own.
Wendy—and all of us who filled the Texas Capitol that day—ignited a movement. I witnessed it firsthand. And seven years later, Wendy’s laced up those famous pink sneakers again. She’s running for Congress to stand up for all the Texans who need a fighter in their corner. On the anniversary of her history-making 13-hour filibuster, I’m helping Wendy raise $13,000 in 13 hours so she can win in TX-21. Will you pitch in a contribution right now? [[link removed]]
Since 2013, the attacks on women’s reproductive rights have not stopped: In that time, dozens of states enacted restrictions on abortion rights and access, in addition to countless Trump administration federal restrictions.
The last thing our country needs right now is more right-wing men in Congress that try to tell women what to do with their bodies. But that’s Chip Roy, Wendy’s dangerously anti-choice opponent. You may recognize his name as the guy who threw a tantrum about protecting big pharma profits. And the one who held up disaster relief aid after hurricanes. And the one who has voted against coronavirus relief legislation. The list, sadly, goes on and on.
But Wendy? She truly cares about the people in TX-21. She’s determined to ensure that every one of their voices is heard—and that women and families have an ally in Congress. The thing is, her district is one of Texas’ most competitive races—in fact, it’s among the most competitive in the whole country, and it’s a seat we can truly flip blue in November.
That’s why I’m doing my part to help Wendy raise $13,000 in the next 13 hours, and in a race as competitive as this one, I can’t stress to you enough how important these resources are—especially with her opponent backed by huge amounts of special interest money, including from the Koch network.
Can I count on you to make a contribution of $25 now to help Wendy Davis flip TX-21, oust one of the most anti-choice members of Congress and expand our Democratic House majority? [[link removed]]
We need to come together and resolve to do everything we can to create needed change in Washington. That change begins with strong Texas women like Wendy Davis. Thank you for stepping up.
