President's Message

This July, we join NAMI and communities across the country in recognizing Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month—a time to honor the legacy of a trailblazer who worked to dismantle stigma, uplift marginalized voices, and expand access to culturally responsive mental health care.

Mental wellness is vital to learning, and NASN's resources promote prevention, early detection, and whole-child well-being. The new fourth edition of School Nursing: A Comprehensive Text includes sections on culturally effective care and caring for students with mental health concerns, featuring evidence-based practices grounded in school nursing experience.

In my practice, I firmly believe that equity must be intentional—in both health and education. Supporting children and families means addressing nonacademic barriers to learning and using practical tools to meet students where they are.

Let's use this month to break the silence and build communities where mental health support is accessible to all. Advocacy begins with awareness and evolves through compassion and a shared purpose—break the stigma so that every student and caregiver can thrive.

Lynn Nelson, MSN, RN, NCSN

Supporting Students with Lupus Through Transition Planning

Lupus can significantly impact a child's daily life, including their school life. Transitioning from pediatric to adult care is a critical step—and without proper planning, students may face serious challenges as they enter adulthood.

NASN's NCPD program, Pediatric to Adult Care Transition for Students with Childhood Onset Lupus - The School Nurse Role in Care Coordination and Transition Planning, equips school nurses with evidence-based information, practical tools, and strategies to support care coordination and transition planning. The program emphasizes health equity and builds school nurse confidence and competence in supporting students most at risk.
