Honoring Scott Ruskan on Capitol Hill

During the devastating flooding that occurred in Texas Hill Country, our first responders leapt into action. Thanks to their tireless work, many individuals were saved in the search and rescue missions that took place.

Among those heroes, one name stands out—Coast Guard Petty Officer Scott Ruskan. On his first-ever mission, Petty Officer Ruskan acted without hesitation and saved 165 lives, many of which were helpless young children.

Scott Ruskan's valor embodies the best of the American spirit, which is why I introduced a Congressional Resolution to honor his service.

This week, I had the privilege of hosting Petty Officer Ruskan on Capitol Hill to present him with that recognition in front of Coast Guard leadership, including Commandant Kevin Lunday and Vice Commandant Tom Allan.

Protecting Funding for Texas Colonias

Earlier this week, I introduced the Ensuring Continued Access to Funding for Colonias Act.

With bipartisan support from every congressional representative along the Texas border, my bill improves eligibility standards for federal grants and provides colonias with a reliable funding source for water, sewage, and housing infrastructure.

These communities along the border often do not have access to basic utilities or services. During my time in Congress, I have been focused on changing this, and have secured over $3 million to improve colonia infrastructure. My new legislation will build on that commitment to promote economic growth and self-sufficiency in colonias.

Preventing the Next Threat to Our Livestock

With the threat of the New World screwworm inching towards our border, we must continue to take swift action to safeguard our livestock industry from this parasite, and protect our economy from an agricultural crisis.

Recently, I conducted outreach to the Department of Health and Human Services to expedite approvals for antiparasitic livestock treatments such as ivermectin and doramectin. Improving access to these treatments could go a long way in helping our producers overcome a potential screwworm outbreak in the U.S.

From introducing the STOP Screwworms Act to securing federal funding and partnering with USDA Secretary Rollins to launch a new eradication facility in South Texas, I’m all in on eliminating this deadly screwworm parasite.

Setting Our Kids Up for Success

Before being elected to Congress, I served on the San Antonio Head Start Policy Council to ensure our children have the resources to obtain a quality education.

Now in Congress, I serve as the Co-Chair of the Head Start Caucus, whose purpose is to promote the incredible value that this program provides to our students.

This week, at a briefing on Capitol Hill, I spoke on my personal connection to Head Start—and about why this program matters—especially in rural and underserved areas.

One of the most important tools we can give our children is access to a good educational foundation to put their best foot forward.

Every child—no matter their ZIP code—deserves the chance to succeed. I’ll continue working to make sure families across South and West Texas can count on school-related programs that deliver real results.
