Before I tell you my story, will you pitch into my campaign today? We’re coming up on our end-of-month deadline quickly.
My first few months of military school, I was off to a rocky start.
I was homesick. I was under strict discipline. To say I was unhappy was an understatement.
I saw no positives to the situation, so I tried to escape. I ran away — regularly.
In fact, I ran away so many times, my sergeant leader drew me a “map” of how to get to the train station so I could finally go home.
That night, I learned I could not read a map. I was lost in the woods, crying, and would take any help I could get.
What happened after that?
My chain of command found me and took me back to school.
They gave me five minutes to call my mom. I begged her to come take me home, but she stood her ground. She said she sacrificed too much for me to leave, so I stayed.
In all honesty, I think I grew up in that moment. I wasn’t going anywhere — literally or figuratively — so I decided to seek out what possibilities were ahead.
I started to take myself seriously. I learned how to look out for others. And what was initially a tough time at the very beginning of my military career turned into a needed opportunity to serve myself and others.
Now, as Maryland's governor, I have made it my mission to leave no one behind. That is why we are listening to and serving everyone. Without the countless voices pitching in, we would not be able to make this Maryland’s decade.
But I need your help so I can continue to serve, and continue fighting for everyone across our state.
I’m no longer running away — in fact, I’m running towards the hard stuff.
That includes helping Marylanders wherever I can.
