He is the seventh Member to hold this position since the Committee was first established as a Select Committee in 2002 and later constituted as a Standing Committee in 2005. “I am honored to have earned the trust and confidence of my colleagues to lead the House Committee on Homeland Security. As a lifelong New Yorker and representative of a district shaped by 9/11, I understand the stakes of this responsibility. ‘Never forget’ is more than a slogan. It is a commitment I have carried with me throughout my entire adult life and one that will continue to drive my work as Chairman,” Andrew said in a statement. “We have serious work ahead of us. Andrew Garbarino (R-Bayport) has been selected as the new chairman of the powerful House Homeland Security Committee, a panel that helps steer federal counterterrorism programs to New York in the wake of the 9/11 attacks. Garbarino, a third-term House member, defeated three other contenders for the post in a vote by the House Republican Steering Committee on Monday evening...In an interview, Garbarino said his time leading the panel will be influenced by growing up in New York when the 9/11 attacks occurred, and by all the first responders and victims he has worked with on issues since he was elected. 'As a lifelong New Yorker and representative of a district shaped by 9/11, I understand the stakes of this responsibility,' Garbarino said. WHAT'S NEW IN NY-02 Supporting Alzheimer’s Research and Treatment in Amityville The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America held a ribbon cutting this week for its new location in Amityville, expanding access to critical care and support services for families impacted by Alzheimer’s disease. Andrew is a steadfast supporter of Alzheimer’s research and treatment and remains committed to advancing federal efforts to find a cure, improve care, and support those living with the disease and their loved ones. SILO Celebrates 35th Anniversary of the ADA This week, Self-Initiated Living Options (SILO) celebrated the 35th anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act with an event at their Medford location. Andrew commends SILO for its continued advocacy and commitment to empowering individuals with disabilities. He remains dedicated to supporting organizations like SILO that are working to strengthen and uplift the disabled community. CASEWORK HIGHLIGHT: Adjusting Insurance Plan After Loss After losing his spouse earlier this year, a 93-year-old constituent contacted Andrew’s office for help adjusting his federal insurance plan. He had attempted to update his coverage and reduce his deductions but later learned the paperwork had not been received by the Department of Labor. Andrew’s casework team stepped in, ensured the correct forms were submitted, and successfully secured the insurance change. They also helped the constituent receive a refund for the higher deductions that had been taken in the meantime. Andrew knows how frustrating dealing with bureaucracy can be. That is why he has an entire team dedicated to helping constituents get what they need from the government. This week, Andrew spoke at the New York First Responders Summit in Washington, D.C., joining law enforcement and fire officials from across the state, including members of the Suffolk County Police Department. In his remarks, Andrew reaffirmed his unwavering support for New York’s first responders. From protecting the World Trade Center Health Program to ensuring police officers and firefighters have the tools and resources they need, Andrew made clear he will always stand with those who put their lives on the line to keep our communities safe. Andrew Talks Cybersecurity with National Technology Security Coalition Andrew met with the National Technology Security Coalition this week to address the growing challenges posed by rising cyber threats. As the newly appointed Chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, Andrew emphasized his commitment to advancing policies that strengthen the nation’s cybersecurity and protect critical infrastructure. He will continue to make safeguarding our networks a top priority. Andrew Chairs Hearing on Cyber Threats to U.S. Critical Infrastructure Andrew led a hearing this week examining the evolution of cyber threats to our nation’s critical infrastructure -15 years after the discovery of the Stuxnet cyber weapon. The hearing, titled “Fully Operational: Stuxnet 15 Years Later and the Evolution of Cyber Threats to Critical Infrastructure,” explored how the cybersecurity landscape has changed since Stuxnet first exposed the real-world impact of offensive cyber tools. In his opening statement, Andrew emphasized the urgent need to strengthen both IT and operational technology defenses across sectors like energy, water, healthcare, and transportation. He also highlighted the rising threat posed by Iranian cyber actors and reaffirmed the importance of reauthorizing two key federal programs: the Cybersecurity Information Sharing Act (CISA 2015) and the State and Local Cybersecurity Grant Program. Andrew will continue to lead efforts to ensure the U.S. remains ahead of emerging cyber threats and that critical infrastructure owners and operators have the tools they need to stay secure.
