Do You Love Building and Fire Code? Do You Love Volunteering?
Canadian Commission on Building and Fire Codes (CCBFC)
The CCBFC is issuing a call for volunteers to serve on the Commission for the development of the 2025 editions of the Codes. Anyone interested in participating is encouraged to submit their application via the Codes Canada website.

The CCBFC is an independent committee of volunteers established by NRC to develop and maintain the National Model Codes. The Commission oversees the work of nine standing committees that develop and improve the detailed technical content of the codes that helps protect the health and safety of Canadians. Commission members should have broad knowledge of the codes.

Commission members commit to a five-year term and may be re-appointed for further terms subject to maintaining a reasonable degree of membership rotation. The membership of the Commission has representation from the industrial and regulatory sectors, as well as general interest groups, and is balanced by geographic region.

Appointments do not carry remuneration; however, travel and hospitality expenses incurred in attending meetings are reimbursed by NRC. For more information, see CCBFC – standing committees on the Codes Canada website.

If you are interested in becoming a Commission member and participating in important National Code development work, please send an expression of interest to the CCBFC Secretary using the online form on the Codes Canada website before June 30, 2020. Please include a 120-word summary of your relevant experience and attach/append your resume.

For further information, please contact the CCBFC Secretary, at [email protected].

B.C. Government's First-Steps in Addressing the rise in Strata Insurance
Government of B.C.
Actions include bringing more transparency to the strata insurance industry, closing loopholes related to depreciation reports, ending referral fees paid to property managers and giving strata owners and corporations the tools they need to do their part. You can find the full release here.

Commentary: CHBA BC participated in the industry roundtables on this important issue in March, and further engagements taking place this summer. Strata insurance should not be a barrier to homeownership in B.C.

It's that time! One more survey to help us help you
CHBA
To bolster association advocacy, CHBA National invites members to complete this survey on the current state of your business and your experiences with the CEWS and other federal emergency programs. This builds on a survey previously conducted by CHBA BC, and will allow us to have a full national picture of the sector at this time. Aggregate data from the survey will help the association convey the challenges being faced by the sector to the federal government, and to provide additional data in support of modifications to the CEWS eligibility criteria.

Temporary COVID-19 layoffs to become permanent by law in B.C.
Tri-City News
Any day now, workers who were temporarily laid off due to a state of emergency that shut businesses down will be deemed, by law, to be permanently laid off, whether they or their employers like it or not. The B.C. government needs to amend the Employment Standards Act, and quickly, or it could put both employers and employees in an untenable position, says Ryan Anderson, a lawyer specializing in employment law at Matthews, Dinsdale and Clark LLP.

Commentary: A letter has been sent from the B.C. business community to Premier John Horgan and Labour Minister Harry Bains asking B.C. to follow other provinces and implement the needed extensions.
