Dear John, When my child came out to my husband and me, we knew just what to do. We expressed our love unconditionally. But when Bryan, who now identifies as non-binary, told us they also wanted to come out at school and to our community, we didn’t know what to do. We were a Black family living in the Midwest in the 1990s. We definitely didn’t see a lot of rainbow flags in those days. That’s why there’s PFLAG. As an organization founded on a mother’s love for her gay son, PFLAG National has seen firsthand the transformative power LGBTQ+ affirming parents have on our communities. We’re working to change laws, to change attitudes, to provide families with resources to be affirming for their loved ones, and to make the world a safer place for people like Bryan and the friends and family members who love them. Today, in honor of PFLAG Parent Day and all the parents and parenting people who lead with love in support of LGBTQ+ people, please make a special gift to PFLAG National. PFLAG Parent Day is a special day of giving to celebrate LGBTQ+ affirming parents and all the people who fill a parenting role for LGBTQ+ kids of all ages. Whether these parental roles are filled by blood relations, chosen family, or even drag mothers, I believe that supportive figures and role models are essential for the next generation of LGBTQ+ youth. As critical protections for LGBTQ+ people are decimated by this Administration, we hear daily from parents, terrified for their own safety and that of their LGBTQ+ kids. What’s happening is frightening. It is unjust. And it is unacceptable. Despite the challenges, PFLAG is still here. Our trans kids who need lifesaving gender affirming care are still here. Our love for our trans and nonbinary children and loved ones remains – and no state law, Executive Order, or Supreme Court ruling is going to change that. We need you in the fight. This PFLAG Parent Day, please donate to PFLAG National to keep our LGBTQ+ loved ones and their families safe. In times of fear and uncertainty, your support provides comfort and hope to our community. Thank you for being part of the PFLAG family. |
