John – I’m Democrat Raja Krishnamoorthi, and all of my life I’ve felt like an underdog. I grew up as a racial, religious, and ethnic minority immigrant kid with 29 letters in my name. Growing up in Peoria, Illinois, I often felt like an outsider because of my identity. Back then, we were one of maybe ten Indian-American families in the whole area. My mother always dressed in a sari. My parents spoke Tamil, a South Indian language, most of the time. We even traveled with our rice cooker.  My parents worked tirelessly to give us a better life, but we fell on hard times, and we lived in public housing and depended on SNAP to eat. Thanks to these essential safety net programs, we were able to make it into the middle class. That’s something I’ll never take for granted. And with the help of my community, and the money I saved working at McDonald’s — I went to college, law school and eventually was honored to be elected by my community as Illinois' first Indian-American Congressman.  But even as a Member of Congress, I’ve never forgotten what it’s like to feel like an underdog. And I’ll be honest – even today I still do. There certainly aren’t a lot of people who look like me or have stories like mine in places like the U.S. Senate. He’s devoted his entire administration to hurting the most vulnerable – immigrant kids, families on food stamps, disabled folks on Medicaid, and so many more. This is personal to me, John – I’ll fight this cruelty with everything I have. Because underdogs fight harder.  From standing up to Kristi Noem in the House Oversight Committee to getting kicked out of ICE detention centers for doing my job, I’ve led the fight against the cruel, authoritarian MAGA agenda. In response, Donald Trump and the MAGA movement are trying to CRUSH our campaign. We just heard that our first major Republican opponent is planning to get in the race – a “battle-hardened” MAGA loyalist. As a life-longer underdog, I’m not afraid of a tough fight.
