Brazil’s Congress just dealt a death blow to the Amazon – and we have only days to save it!

Under the cover of night, lawmakers passed a sweeping anti-environmental bill that would rip open the most preserved regions of the Amazon and strip Indigenous lands of legal protections to fast-track industrialisation.

President Lula can still veto the bill, but he has only *15 working days* to do it.

The powerful agribusiness lobby is already circling, sparing no expense to make sure this devastating bill becomes law. But if we move fast, we can launch an all-out push to save the Amazon. Whether it’s flooding Lula’s office with public outcry, pushing out ads to expose shady lobbying, backing Indigenous-led groups defending their lands, escalating legal challenges, or another tactic – we’ll double down and make it too costly for Lula to sign this bill into law.

This bill is so unpopular that Brazil’s Congress held the vote at 3 am. Hundreds of organizations and Indigenous communities are calling it the worst environmental setback for the country in over 40 years – and urging President Lula to veto it.

If signed into law, this ‘devastation bill’ as it’s called would allow oil, mining and agribusiness giants to sign off their own environmental licensing...effectively eradicating independent oversight.

It’s not just the Amazon that’s under threat. The Pantanal and Cerrado could also be wiped out. Some 3,000 territories, including more than a third of Indigenous lands, would lose legal protections that have fended off full-scale exploitation.

Right now the President is under growing pressure from big industry to sign this bill into law.

So we need to move quickly and double up on our efforts to break through the noise. It’s going to take a surge of coordinated public outcry to work – but if everyone chips in what they can, we can race to amplify our voices and show Lula that his people – and the whole world – are watching.
