Dear Reader,

For thirty years, First Things has stood strong.

In my email earlier this week, I mentioned how this year’s campaign is different because the need for level-headed thinking is so great. But there’s another reason this year’s campaign isn’t quite like the ones before: This year also marks First Things’s thirtieth anniversary.

Will you celebrate thirty years of speaking up on behalf of religious believers in the public square by contributing to our campaign today ([link removed]) ?

Much has changed in the world since First Things first hit newsstands in March of 1990. And there is much that religious conservatives can be proud of. The number of abortions in the United States has declined by more than 50 percent since 1990. Divorce rates have gone down as well. Yet as last week’s Supreme Court decision made clear, we’ve lost ground as well.

It would be nice if public life were a sports game and we could tally wins and losses to show where we’ve come out over the years. But life isn’t like that.

When I look back over our thirty years, I think instead of the impact we’ve had on the lives of readers. I frequently run into people from all professional backgrounds—businessmen, ministers, academics, homeschool parents—who tell me of how discovering First Things was the start of an intellectual journey for them. I’m humbled by their stories.

If First Things has had an impact on your life, will you please make a gift ([link removed]) to support our campaign?

Whether you first encountered us through a newsstand in 1990 or a podcast last week, I am grateful to have you as part of the First Things family. It’s readers like you that have kept us strong these past thirty years.

Sincerely,

R. R. Reno, Editor
First Things
