The National Committee is in this fight for the long haul

The consequences of the new Trump-GOP megalaw ( [link removed] ) for older Americans are deeply troubling.

Buried in the more than 1,000-page legislation are provisions that gut key lifelines that millions of seniors rely on:

Medicaid cuts that could strip nursing home coverage
Reductions to SNAP nutrition benefits
Deep cuts to Affordable Care Act subsidies that could force thousands of Americans age 50-64 to lose their health care coverage

This law also expands massive tax cuts that mainly benefit the wealthy and huge corporations, which will add more than $3 trillion to an already ballooning federal debt. In short, this law threatens the health and well-being of countless Americans who’ve spent decades working, paying taxes and contributing to the very programs now under assault.

But we’re not accepting this outcome. And neither should you. The National Committee — along with our allies in Congress and fellow advocacy organizations — are already fighting back. We’re working to introduce new legislation in Congress that would reverse some of the most damaging elements of this big, ugly law and restore protections seniors have earned and deserve. We’ll also continue to inform the public about the details of the Trump-GOP megalaw so more Americans understand how this callous law impacts them and their families.

At the same time, we’re also preparing for the next battle: defending Social Security and Medicare from similar attempts to slash benefits and dismantle the programs seniors are counting on for a secure and healthy retirement.

Make no mistake, as your advocate in Washington, DC, the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare is in this fight for the long haul.

Medicare’s 60th Anniversary

Next Wednesday, we will celebrate Medicare’s 60th Anniversary! That’s 60 years of providing health insurance to tens of millions of retired Americans and helping to keep older Americans out of poverty.

But despite the fact that Medicare continues to be enormously successful and popular, this program may be offered up as a sacrifice on the altar of debt reduction and paying for other fiscal priorities, including massive tax breaks for the wealthy and huge corporations.

With your support, the National Committee is fighting to stop harmful proposals in Washington that would raise the Medicare eligibility age, expand the privatization of traditional Medicare and roll back critical drug pricing reforms that are helping seniors afford their lifesaving medications.

What Medicaid Recipients Should Know About The 'One Big Beautiful Bill' ( [link removed] )

This means that if an individual resides in a home valued above $1 million, even if they don’t make enough money to sustain themselves, they will be considered ineligible for Medicaid. “This change will be particularly harmful in states with higher property values like California, New York, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Washington,” said Dan Adcock, Director of Government Relations & Policy at the National Committee. It’s official—the US government is making a new move on Social Security, and millions of beneficiaries will be affected ( [link removed] )

The Social Security Administration (SSA) has decided to move around one thousand in-person service workers to reinforce its main 1-800 phone line. The idea, in theory, is to shorten wait times for callers, but many people (including employees and several experts) aren’t so sure. In fact, some believe this “quick fix” will cause more problems than it solves. (July 16, 2025, Union Rayo, Laura M.)
