I'll be direct, John.
In this email, I’m going to ask you to make a donation to my campaign for Governor of California. But first, I want to explain why this request is so important – especially today.
The end of Gavin Newsom's term may seem far off, but next month already marks another critical benchmark for our campaign. New campaigns will be sizing up our number of contributors for any signs of weakness and trying to bully whoever they can out of this race.
I can't stress enough just how important it is to send a message of widespread, early support. This type of support shows we aren’t waiting for anyone with a savior complex to finally make their intentions known.
The good news is the backing we've received so far has been truly inspiring. However, we need to keep the momentum going.
So I need to ask:
With our July deadline looming, we’ve set a goal of raising another $15,000 in online donations before the month ends. I'm hoping you can add a $3 donation before midnight. Please know that I would not ask if it wasn’t important.

I’ve been on the road all year, and people across the state are telling me California is more out of balance than ever.
I know you feel it too.
The cost of housing, food, education, childcare and elder care is all increasingly out of reach. California’s future is in our hands, and it’s going to take all of us coming together to make it add up for us.
Sincerely,
Betty
