Could midwives be the solution to the America's maternal health crisis?
Its 5 a.m. at Mother Health International (MHI), a birth center in Northern Uganda affiliated with Yale University, when the call comes in from a local midwife about 12 miles away. A woman in her village has gone into labor. The alert sets a series of gears into motion: a motorcycle driver is immediately dispatched to zip down the mostly unpaved roads to her location, while the nurse midwives at MHI prepare a room for labor and delivery. Within an hour, the laboring mother and her local midwife arrive at MHI where shes greeted by nurse midwives who work together to ensure a safe delivery. An ambulance stands ready in case the birth becomes difficult, but it isnt needed. Soon, the room celebrates: a new baby is welcomed into the world and placed onto her mothers chest.

When ICE Agents Are Waiting Outside the Courtroom - The New Yorker (No paywall)
When ICE Agents Are Waiting Outside the Courtroom
Earlier this month in downtown Manhattan, on the second floor of a deli near Federal Plaza, a twenty-eight-year-old named Mercedes waited anxiously as she prepared for the possibility of her arrest. She was with her eleven-year-old daughter, Jhuliana, who had just finished sixth grade in the Bronx, and her toddler, who was born in New York shortly after Mercedes and Jhuliana crossed the U.S.-Mexico border, in the summer of 2023. The young family sat at a table near a waist-high glass railing that overlooked the cash registers on the first floor, and watched as uniformed men from the Department of Homeland Security filed in and out for coffee and breakfast. I saw on TikTok the other day that some guys from ICE came into a restaurant and sent everyone running, but they were just getting something to eat, Mercedes said, laughing nervously. Her toddler, who was almost two, leaned over the railing and called out to the agents in baby gibberish, but the agents did not acknowledge her. Come, come here! Mercedes said, and the child ran back into her arms.

What if AI made the world's economic growth explode? - The Economist (No paywall)
What if AI made the world's economic growth explode?
UNTIL 1700 the world economy did not really growit just stagnated. Over the previous 17 centuries global output had expanded by 0.1% a year on average, a rate at which it takes nearly a millennium for production to double. Then spinning jennies started whirring and steam engines began to puff. Global growth quintupled to 0.5% a year between 1700 and 1820. By the end of the 19th century it had reached 1.9%. In the 20th century it averaged 2.8%, a rate at which production doubles every 25 years. Growth has not just become the norm; it has accelerated.

Female Founders' Newest Networking Strategy? This Centuries-Old Game
Last year, Angie Lin quit her marketing job at a startup building electric boats to focus on building her own business: hosting mahjong events around Los Angeles.Lin, who is Taiwanese American, started teaching her friends how to play the tile game in 2022, and the hobby she picked up while living in Taiwan years earlier quickly became a side hustle. When she hosted her first mahjong party, about 40 people showed up to her house. The second event, held in a warehouse downtown, attracted more than 200 players. She started charging $10 to $15 a ticket for pop-ups that included lessons about rules, strategy, and the cultural history of the game, which dates back to mid-19th-century China. Soon enough, these one-off events turned into a club called Mahjong Mistress, which held events every few months. When celebrities, including Ali Wong, Rashida Jones, and Steven Yeun, started calling Lin asking her to curate private mahjong events, she realized she had a real business and formed an LLC.
