Dr. Aqsa Durrani shares her experiences from a recent assignment in Gaza, and the agony of being unable to provide patients with food that is being blocked only a few miles away. |
On the second episode of the Humanitarian Lens podcast from Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), Dr. Aqsa Durrani—a pediatrician, epidemiologist, and MSF USA board member—joins MSF USA CEO Avril Benoît to talk about what she saw while treating the wounded at MSF’s field hospital in Deir Al-Balah, Gaza, on a recent assignment.
Dr. Durrani cared for Palestinians of all ages with injuries from airstrikes, burns, fractures, and gunshot wounds. The vast majority of the patients she saw were women and children. She also saw firsthand the devastating consequences of the siege imposed on Gaza by Israeli forces as stocks of food and other essential supplies dwindled.
“[It’s] torture, to have to tell a mother who is begging for just a little bit more food for her children that we don't actually have it,” said Dr. Durrani. “But it's not because we don't have it. It's because it's being deliberately blocked from us.”
