John, this is not normal!
Abbott and his cronies in the Texas Legislature are gerrymandering to give themselves FIVE MORE SEATS. This is totally corrupt and anti-democratic. Redistricting usually happens every ten years. Abbott has decided to do it five years early in a blatant attempt to give Trump more seats in Congress. They are losing and they know it.
This isn’t about representing Texans; it's about protecting their own political power. The hypocrisy is staggering. They claim to hate big government, yet follow federal orders to rewrite maps in secret, all to serve the powerful, not the people.
And just hours ago, the fight escalated dramatically. The first redistricting hearing descended into chaos, with former congressional candidate Isaiah Martin being removed from the room in handcuffs for speaking out. Following this, State Rep. Gene Wu, chair of the Texas House Democratic Caucus, announced that Texas House Democrats are leaving the state!
“Since Governor Abbott is acting like a child, we are going to find adults to go talk to,” said Wu.
This is why our work is critical. While they ignore us, or worse, arrest us for speaking out, we take issues like marijuana decriminalization directly to the ballot—and we win. Nearly 90% of the first-time and infrequent voters we engage go on to vote in the very next election. In a state where half the electorate stays home, this is how we build real power.
Politicians fear this more than anything. They can rig maps behind closed doors, but we are out in the open, building a movement of organized, empowered citizens. That is a force no gerrymander can stop.
