Shiou Deng called "gold standard of selflessness" in memorial service A memorial service honoring fallen Los Angeles Police Department Sgt. Shiou Deng took place on Thursday morning in Covina. Family, friends and members of the LAPD gathered at Forest Lawn Covina Hills Mausoleum to mourn and celebrate the fallen officer. Sgt. Deng was killed on June 23 after responding to a crash on the southbound 405 Freeway in Brentwood. At the time, LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell confirmed Deng was helping people involved in a crash when another car came by and hit him. The crash prompted a several-hour closure of the freeway as police conducted their investigation. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass remarked at the memorial service that Deng was the "gold standard of selflessness." "Everything I've learned about the sergeant has been consistent with a man with the utmost integrity and character," she said. McDonnell described Deng, a 26-year veteran, as a caring man who was a "true leader." Deng joined the department in 1998, working in both the Central and Southwest divisions before transferring to LAPD's Mental Evaluation Unit, where he served for more than 16 years. A man has been hospitalized after a stray bullet struck him during a gang shootout in Los Angeles, officials confirmed to KTLA Friday morning. It happened at a Chevron gas station in the Vermont Knolls neighborhood around 12:30 a.m. Friday, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Officers responded to reports of a shooting victim in the area of 74th and Figueroa Streets and arrived to find a man suffering from a gunshot wound to the face. The LAPD only publicly identified the individual as a male victim; his age and name were not provided. Despite being shot in the face, the victim was purportedly taken to a hospital in stable condition, and authorities began investigating the crime scene. A preliminary investigation indicated two suspects, only described as males, had been shooting at each other when the victim was hit with a stray bullet. It was not immediately clear whether the victim was grazed or if the injury was deeper. LAPD confirmed the shooting was gang-related and encouraged anyone with information to contact law enforcement. KTLA 5 Another break-in at Hollywood home after string of SFV burglaries; LAPD ramps up crime response Another break-in happened at a home in Hollywood overnight following a string of burglaries across the San Fernando Valley area, prompting police to ramp up their response efforts. In the latest incident, officers responded to a home near Sunset Boulevard around 11:50 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. No one was home during the break-in and it's unclear if anything was stolen. A search was underway for the two men who police say broke into the home. This comes after a wave of burglaries across the San Fernando Valley. The LAPD is now stepping up its response in areas like Encino, which has seen several break-ins this month. Earlier this week, the Encino home of Teddi Mellencamp, former star of "The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" was targeted, but security alarms thwarted the suspects. Last week, the bodies of an "American Idol" executive and her husband were found murdered in their Encino home, days after a home invasion robbery. ABC 7 LAPD Inducting 29 Recruits The Los Angeles Police Department graduates a new recruit class Friday. Los Angles police Chief Jim McDonnell, representatives from the mayor’s office, members of the Board of Police Commissioners and the police department’s command staff were due to attend a ceremony at the police academy near Elysian Park, where 29 recruits will become sworn LAPD officers. The graduating class, which includes another three Los Angeles Airport Police officers, is made up of 23 men and six women, all of whom completed more than 900 hours of training over the course of weeks. Twenty-four of the 29 LAPD graduates are Hispanic and one is Asian. Three dogs, a Labrador retriever, a poodle and a border collie/poodle mix have been professionally trained to help victims of sexual and physical abuse, domestic violence and human trafficking. While primarily serving children, the K-9s will also support people with disabilities and family members of homicide victims at all of the 14 Los Angeles County courthouses. "These K-9s are heroes of the DA's Office, providing immeasurable strength and support to children and other vulnerable victims as they navigate the criminal justice system in the aftermath of horrific, life-altering crimes," District Attorney Nathan Hochman said. The newest members of the team, Miata, Johnnie and Corbin, are the second generation of dogs specifically trained for this unit. CBS 2 Man to Plead Guilty to Pimping Underage Girls in South LA A Riverside County man is expected to plead guilty Friday to trafficking two underage girls for the purpose of prostitution on “Fig,” the notorious miles-long stretch of Figueroa Street in South Los Angeles known as a haven for commercial sex workers and customers. Christian Brandon O’Neal Scurlock, 22, of Moreno Valley, has agreed to enter his plea to a single federal count of sex trafficking of a minor, a felony carrying a possible sentence of between 10 years and life imprisonment, court papers show. According to an affidavit filed in the case, in April 2024, officers with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department stopped O’Neal, who had been seen grabbing a young girl by her neck and pushing her into a Mercedes-Benz. When officers approached, they found two minor girls, ages 13 and 16 years old, inside the car. The officers said they saw several condoms inside the vehicle in plain view, court papers show. MyNewsLA Southern California man sentenced for DUI crash that injured 2 police officers A Ventura County man was sentenced to prison for a DUI crash that injured two police officers. Luis Fernando Piceno, 28, of Moorpark, was sentenced to five years and four months in prison for crashing into two Simi Valley officers in their patrol vehicles. On Oct. 24, 2024, Piceno was speeding on Tapo Canyon Road in Simi Valley when he collided with the marked patrol cars. Piceno admitted to driving 80 to 90 miles per hour at the time. Both officers were transported to the hospital for treatment. An alcohol screening revealed Piceno had a blood alcohol level of 0.13%, which was over the legal limit. On June 16, 2025, he pleaded guilty to a DUI causing injury. He also admitted to special allegations including causing great bodily injury in commission of a felony, causing injury to more than one victim, and a drunk driving prior. The incident marked Piceno’s second DUI conviction. On July 24, he was sentenced to five years and four months in prison. KTLA 5 Ohio officer dies after shooter lying in wait ambushed police who parked to eat lunch An officer in Ohio has died after a shooter lying in wait ambushed him and another officer as they parked to eat pizza in a remote, undeveloped area, Lorain police said Thursday. Lorain police Officer Phillip C. Wagner, 35, had been flown to a trauma center after the attack Wednesday afternoon in the city west of Cleveland, a police statement said. It said he died surrounded by family at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland. The shooting wounded Wagner’s partner as well as a third officer who responded to their call for help. Authorities say the attacker was Lorain resident Michael Joseph Parker, 28, who was pronounced dead after an exchange of gunfire. They say he acted alone. Police have not shared details on any motive. The department said Wagner joined the force in early 2022 after serving with the U.S. Marine Corps and the Sheffield Village Police Department. His colleagues called him a respected and beloved officer known for dedication, professionalism and compassion. Acting Lorain Police Chief Michael Failing said Wagner’s life and service “will never be forgotten.” “Our department mourns the loss of a true hero and stands in unwavering support of Officer Wagner’s family, friends, and fellow officers during this heartbreaking time,” Failing said. Associated Press Public Safety News Fiery Los Angeles crash into tree leaves driver trapped, 3 in hospital A violent crash in Los Angeles’ Beverly Grove neighborhood left four people injured, including three who were hospitalized, after their car slammed into a tree and caught fire Friday morning. The incident occurred shortly before 2:30 a.m. on Crescent Heights Boulevard near Beverly Boulevard. Video taken shortly before emergency crews arrived at the scene showed the white BMW on fire as bystanders attempted to help the people inside. A man with a fire extinguisher eventually came running out to douse the flames. One person remained trapped as police arrived at the scene. Three of the vehicle’s occupants were later taken to a local hospital in stable condition. A fourth was treated at the scene, a Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson confirmed to KTLA. The cause of the crash remains under investigation. KTLA 5 Amid widespread measles outbreak, infectious traveler confirmed at LAX, nearby hotel An out-of-country traveler who passed through Los Angeles International Airport this month and stayed in a local hotel was confirmed to have measles, health officials announced Thursday. L.A. County Department of Public Health officials are investigating two sites in Los Angeles the man visited while infectious, according to a news release. Public spaces where others may have been exposed to the infection are LAX and the Hilton Los Angeles Airport, at 5711 W. Century Blvd. The person landed July 5 at LAX; the exact time and flight information were still being investigated, according to the department. The infected individual was at the Hilton from 7:30 p.m. July 5 until checking out at 1 p.m. July 7. Individuals who were at these locations on these days are urged by the department to monitor potential symptoms for at least three weeks. Symptoms include high fever, coughs, or red, watery eyes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. They’re also urged to confirm their MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccination status. Those who have not been immunized are at higher risk of infection.
